MANILA, Philippines – Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio were proclaimed as the 17th president and 15th vice president of the Republic of the Philippines on Wednesday, May 25, 2022.

The Congress, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, proclaimed the tandem as the winners of the presidential and vice-presidential race in Election 2022. The canvassing of votes for president and vice president lasted barely two days. Bongbong and Sara were proclaimed by Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and House Speaker Rep. Lord Allan Velasco.

Bongbong’s mother, former First Lady Imelda Romualdez-Marcos was present during the proclamation.



Bongbong earned over 31 million votes in the presidential race, almost double that of the second candidate, Leni Robredo. Meanwhile, Sara earned 32.2 million votes, more than triple the 9.3 million votes received by her closest rival Sen. Kiko Pangilinan.

Aside from pushing for unity, the tandem promised to lower the price of rice and electricity rates. They also plan to continue President Rodrigo Duterte’s Build, Build, Build program.

The only son and namesake of late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Sr, Bongbong was born into a life of politics and fame. The former president ruled the Philippines for 21 years from 1965 until 1986.

He studied at the Institucion Teresiana in kindergarten and proceeded to La Salle Greenhills in Manila for his elementary education.

In college, Bongbong was sent to England to study in an all-boys Benedictine abbey, Worth School. Afterwards, he pursued his undergraduate degree, graduating with a Special Diploma in Social Studies from Oxford University in England. He continued to pursue his Masters’ in Business Administration at Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA.

Bongbong was 23 when he won unopposed as Vice Governor of the northern province of Ilocos Norte in 1980. He succeeded as Governor of the province from 1983 to 1986.

Following their family’s exile after the EDSA revolution, Bongbong returned to politics and served as Congressman in the Second District of Ilocos Norte. He became Governor of Ilocos Norte for three terms from 1998 to 2007.

After his term in 2007, Bongbong returned to Congress and was appointed as the Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. In 2010, he won as a senator and ranked 7th overall.

In 2016, Bongbong lost his vice presidential bid against Leni Robredo. He filed an electoral protest against Robredo and questioned the election results. In 2021, the Supreme Court dismissed the entire electoral protest.

Born to a political family in Davao City, Sara is the eldest daughter of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The Dutertes have been leading their hometown since 1988 with Rodrigo winning 7 terms before running for the presidency in 2016.

Sara graduated high school at the Philippine Women’s College and finished a degree in Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy at San Pedro College in Davao City.

She pursued law and finished her Bachelor of Laws at San Sebastian College – Recoletos in 2005. He passed the Philippine Bar in the same year. As a young lawyer, she became a court attorney under the Office of the Associate Justice Romeo J. Carpio Sr. in the Supreme Court.

Following in her father’s footsteps in Davao City, Sara became the city vice mayor from 2007 to 2010. She became the mayor from 2010 to 2013 and won a reelection bid from 2016 until 2022.

Despite being the toprunner in the 2022 pre-election surveys for president, Sara decided to run for vice president under Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr’s UniTeam. Sara won by a landslide alongside Marcos. On May 25, 2022, Sara was proclaimed the new vice president of the Philippines.
