They say that dreams are sweeter when achieved through hardwork and perseverance. For Maricris, fulfilling her dream of being a licensed elementary teacher was made out of her pure determination.
The 26-year-old topnotcher was born to a humble family in Carmen, Cebu. Her father worked as a farmer, while her mother was a Barangay Health Worker (BHW).
Due to poverty, Maricris had to stop studying for a while after she finished high school. Instead of letting time pass by, Maricris decided to find ways to fund her college education.
She decided to work as a “yaya” or a nanny to save money. When she was 18 years old, she went to Danao City to work in a company.
Maricris had to manage her earnings to save for college and help her family’s needs. She was able to save enough and enter college at the age of 19.
All her hardwork paid off when she graduated cum laude at the Cebu Technological University (CTU) Carmen Campus.
Top 1 in LET
According to Maricris, aside from enrolling in a review center, she also watched many online coaching videos on YouTube.
She admitted that she only learned about the LET results when her younger sibling checked online. She thought that the results would be released at a later date.
When Maricris finally found out that she topped the LET elementary level, she was over the moon. “Pwerte nakong lipaya,” she said. [I was so happy.]
Maricris ranked 1 with 92.40% and led the other 8 Cebu graduates on the Top 10 list.
With her success, Maricris wants to give back by being a volunteer teacher. She explained that she experienced being a volunteer teacher when she was in high school. Maricris said it’s a good feeling to be able to help children be more interested in school.
