MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore Batangas on Sunday morning, May 22, 2022, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said it traced the epicenter of the earthquake 21 kilometers northwest of Calatagan in Batangas. It had a depth of 132 kilometers.

The earthquake, recorded at 5:50:49 AM, was of tectonic origin.

Some parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces like Bulacan and Laguna also experienced tremors.

Phivolcs added that damage and aftershocks may be expected.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said “no destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data” after the earthquake.


Asked what may have caused the earthquake, Ishmael Narag, officer-in-charge of the Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring division of Phivolcs said it was the Eurasian Plate sliding against the Manila Trench.

“‘Yung Eurasian Plate, bumubunggo sa Pilipinas, duma-dive pailalim sa Manila Trench,” he said on Super Radyo dzBB interview.
