The congressman also revealed that he had accepted the nomination and considered it an honor and a rare opportunity. Remulla said, “I’ve accepted it. It’s an honor… It’s a very rare opportunity given to lawyers like us.”
Remulla said that he was able to share insights and discuss issues about the justice system with Marcos during the campaign. He believes that the cause of protests is not poverty but injustice.
“Marami kaming naging conversation ni incoming President Marcos during the campaign… At that time, I had no idea I was being considered… The other specific things, we will talk about it later kasi maraming mali sa ating Justice system na dapat itama natin, iwasto natin,” he added.
“Kaya nagkakaroon ng problema sa bayan, kaya nagkakaroon ng pag-aalsa, hindi naman dahil sa poverty but because of injustice,” Remulla added.
But even before the presidential run, Remulla said that he and Marcos had ties since 2007 when they were both members of the House of Representatives.
“Marami na kaming pinagsamahan in the past. We were together from 2007 to 2010 in the House… We would always have conversations talaga,” he said.
“I had 2 or 3 chances to travel with him… Parang he was hinting to me already, kahit wala pa yung boto, na he wanted me there,” Remulla added.
Gives up representative post
Because of his appointment, Remulla would have to give up his post as Cavite’s 7th district representative. He won unopposed in the May 2022 elections. Remulla said he would give up his representative post to serve a bigger duty.
“Tumakbo ako para maglingkod bilang representante, pero kapag tinawag ka ng pangulo, paano ka tatanggi kung ang iyong bayan ay maraming problema na puwede mong matulungan na iayos? Do your duty as a citizen. We have to make our nation-state a better nation-state,” Remulla said.
Meanwhile, Marcos explained his decision why he nominated Remulla to be his justice secretary. He calls him a very good lawyer. “He has a good, great many years of experience in government. Many people do not know is he is actually very good lawyer,” Marcos said.
The Remullas of Cavite have been known to be allies of Marcos. During the campaign season, Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla assures Marcos that he will get 800,000 votes but corrected it to be Marcos’ margin of victory in Cavite. Remulla said, “Sasagarin ko na ang yabang ko Mr. President, yung 800,000 pong yon ay hindi niyo boto, ayan lang po ang lamang na makukuha niyo dito sa Cavite.”
When ‘Boying’ Remulla was asked if his nomination had something to do with the 1.2 million votes Marcos got in Cavite, he said he didn’t know. “I don’t know. I didn’t apply for it. I was called for it,” he said.
